Medaxis is a debridement system that uses pressure-controlled micro water jet technology to selectively remove necrotic tissue, fibrin and biofilm. Thanks to its design that respects viable tissue, it cleanses the wound bed without traumatizing it and prepares the ground for a safe transition to the granulation and epithelialization phases. What is it?

Microjet Wound Therapy is a high-precision micro water jet device used for jet lavage, irrigation and debridement of acute and chronic wounds.

What is it made of?

The system consists of an electronically controlled main unit, a single-use pump cassette, a sterile connection set and single-use handpieces with different jet geometries (standard jet, flat jet, etc.). A sterile irrigation/debridement solution (e.g. normal saline) is delivered through the pump to the handpiece, which produces a fine, directable micro water jet according to the selected pressure and nozzle. It is designed to work with accessories such as a protective cover and DebriClip to protect the surrounding area and the user.

Why use it?

This device is preferred, particularly in poorly healing, chronic or infected wounds, for removing non-viable tissue in a controlled manner while preserving granulation tissue as far as possible. The micro water jet mechanically removes biofilm and necrotic tissue while triggering controlled micro-bleeding, helping the wound bed re-enter revascularization and the healing process; less tissue trauma and better patient tolerability have been reported compared with sharp debridement.

Published clinical data for Microjet / debritom+ show that, in hard-to-heal wounds, it is associated with higher complete closure rates, fewer infections and fewer hospital admissions than sharp debridement (1); fewer adverse events and less pain have also been reported with the system (2). By providing tissue-sparing, repeatable debridement, this approach improves patient comfort and offers an option that can be applied safely in outpatient settings at follow-up visits, particularly for diabetic foot ulcers, venous ulcers and other chronic wounds (3).

Indications

debritom+ is indicated for mechanical debridement of burns and acute and chronic wounds. It is suitable for use particularly in wounds that are necrotic, covered with fibrin or suspected of harboring biofilm, including diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, venous and arterial leg ulcers, traumatic and surgical wounds, and partial-thickness burns. It is preferred in clinical situations where the aim is to remove necrotic tissue while preserving viable tissue as far as possible, and the wound bed needs to be prepared for the granulation and epithelialization phases.

How to use

    The device must be used only by trained healthcare professionals:

    Assess the wound and confirm the clinical indication for irrigation/debridement.

  3. 03

    Prepare the device according to the manufacturer’s instructions

    Connect the main unit, fit the single-use pump cassette, the connection set and the appropriate handpiece, and connect the sterile irrigation/debridement solution to the system.

  4. 04

    Select the appropriate pressure level and jet type according to the wound type and the patient’s pain sensitivity; perform irrigation/debridement with the micro water jet at the recommended working distance and angle (e.g. light sweeping movements at a suitable angle and distance).

  5. 05

    When the desired level of irrigation/debridement has been reached, stop the procedure, assess the wound bed and complete the treatment with a suitable dressing (e.g. a superabsorbent dressing).

  6. 06

    Dispose of used single-use accessories in accordance with infection control protocols; clean and maintain the device in accordance with the IFU and your institution’s infection control rules.
