Pressure ulcer

A pressure ulcer is localized damage to the skin and/or underlying tissue, usually over a bony prominence, resulting from prolonged pressure or pressure combined with shear forces. Sustained pressure reduces tissue perfusion and can lead to cell damage and, over time, tissue loss. In addition to pressure, shear forces can contribute to damage in deeper tissues, while friction and moisture may play a role in damage to the superficial layers of the skin.
