Venous and arterial leg ulcer

Venous leg ulcers are chronic wounds that develop when the venous system of the legs cannot carry blood back to the heart efficiently enough. Loss of function in the venous valves can cause blood to flow backwards and pool in the legs. As a result, venous pressure rises and, over time, tissue damage and ulceration can develop.

Arterial leg ulcers are wounds that develop when not enough blood and oxygen reach the tissues of the leg and foot through the arteries. Conditions such as peripheral artery disease and atherosclerosis can reduce blood flow, impair tissue nourishment and pave the way for ulcer formation.
