MANUKAhd and MANUKAhd Lite are wound dressings that combine medical-grade manuka honey with a high MGO content and a superabsorbent fiber matrix, available in different thicknesses according to exudate level. Providing antimicrobial action and effective exudate management in the same structure, they help reduce bioburden, control the risk of maceration and maintain a balanced moist environment. What is it?

MANUKAhd and MANUKAhd Lite are modern gelling-fiber wound dressings impregnated with medical-grade manuka honey that gel on contact with exudate.

What is it made of?

They are made by impregnating medical-grade manuka honey into a cross-linked, stabilized gelling-fiber matrix of superabsorbent fibers that gel on contact with exudate. The fiber structure retains and gels exudate and slough within itself, while the manuka honey, with a pH of 3–4.5, is released into the wound bed in a controlled manner; the aim is both a moist healing environment and a clean wound surface. Lite, thinner and with a lower honey/absorption load, is configured for daily changes, while MANUKAhd, with a thicker matrix and a higher load, is configured for use for up to 5–7 days.

The honey’s low pH and osmolality support autolytic debridement, making it easier for slough to soften and for the wound bed to be cleansed. The controlled release of high-MGO honey provides the potential to sustain its effect even when diluted by exudate, creating a more predictable process in the transition to granulation and epithelialization.

While conventional absorbent dressings only manage exudate, these products combine exudate management with the biological effect of honey. Whereas the literature debates resistance and tissue tolerance with silver dressings, no lasting resistance has been demonstrated with medical manuka honey, and high patient comfort and tolerability have been reported. MANUKAhd offers flexibility for patients who need less frequent dressing changes, and Lite for those who need more frequent ones.

Indications

MANUKAhd and MANUKAhd Lite are suitable for use within moist wound care in acute and chronic wounds that are infected or at risk of infection. They are indicated in particular for first- and second-degree burns, traumatic and surgical wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers and venous/arterial leg ulcers. They are preferred, subject to clinical assessment and together with suitable secondary dressings, in wounds with local signs of infection or a risk of bioburden where the aim is to benefit from the antimicrobial effect of the high MGO content of medical-grade manuka honey.

How to use

Assess the wound

Infection, exudate, slough and periwound skin.

Cleanse / debride if necessary

Reduce thick necrosis.

Choose the product and size

It should cover the entire wound area; do not pack it tightly.

Place and secure

Place the dressing in contact with the wound bed; secure it with a suitable film/bandage.

Set the change interval

Lite generally daily; MANUKAhd up to 5–7 days depending on the clinical situation.

Reassess

Monitor odor, slough, granulation and pain; change earlier if the wound deteriorates.
