MANUKApli is a pure topical wound care product supplied in a tube, containing 100% medical-grade manuka honey with high MGO potency. Its natural antimicrobial action helps reduce bioburden, while its low pH and high osmolarity support autolytic debridement and create a moist healing environment. By allowing exudate and sloughed tissue to be managed with an absorbent secondary dressing, it protects granulation tissue and prepares a wound bed suitable for epithelialization.

What is it?

MANUKApli is a single-use wound product in a tube, containing 100% medical-grade manuka honey (Leptospermum scoparium).

What is it made of?

MANUKApli contains only high-potency medical-grade manuka honey, with no added carrier or filler. The low-pH (3.0–4.5) honey is supplied in a sterile tube applicator; the honey is applied directly to the wound bed, while exudate and necrotic tissue are absorbed by a separate absorbent dressing (e.g. MANUKAhd / MANUKAhd Lite or another suitable superabsorbent dressing).

By lowering the pH of the wound bed, this formulation helps optimize healing and support autolytic debridement, making it easier for fibrinous/necrotic tissue to soften and be removed and for a clean, viable wound bed to form. The controlled release of the honey supports a moist wound environment while the absorbent secondary dressing collects exudate and sloughed tissue; this may contribute to reducing both the risk of infection and trauma during dressing changes.

Thanks to its high MGO potency (approximately 560 mg/kg), MANUKApli provides a concentration that can maintain its antibacterial efficacy in the wound bed even when diluted by exudate — an important advantage, particularly in chronic and hard-to-heal wounds. No lasting bacterial resistance to medical-grade manuka honey has been reported to date; even in long-term exposure studies, the changes in susceptibility that emerged were found to be reversible (well below the threshold for clinical failure) (1). By contrast, the development of resistance to silver is discussed in the literature as a debated risk; in addition, some in vitro data report that silver can have a cytotoxic effect on epidermal cells, whereas this effect was not seen with honey (2). In clinical-use evaluations in diabetic foot ulcers, medical honey products stood out for reduced odor and slough, high patient comfort and clinician satisfaction, and could be used safely without causing deterioration even in cases with a poor course (2). All of this makes MANUKApli not merely an agent that provides moisture and autolytic debridement, but also an option with a low risk of resistance that is gentle on tissue and clinically predictable.

Indications

MANUKApli is suitable for use in acute and chronic wounds that are infected or at risk of infection. It is indicated for diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, venous/arterial leg ulcers, traumatic and surgical wounds and partial-thickness burns, particularly in wounds with moderate to high exudate. It is preferred, together with suitable secondary dressings, in clinical scenarios where the antimicrobial effect of its high MGO content is sought and bioburden and odor control are required.

Manufacturer’s warning

If the secondary dressing proves inadequate after honey application, or in case of excessive leakage or clinical deterioration, change the dressing earlier; if systemic infection is suspected, escalate the assessment as required by protocol.

How to use

Assess the wound

Carry out a clinical assessment of signs of infection, the amount of exudate, the presence of necrotic tissue and the condition of the periwound skin.

Cleanse the wound / debride if necessary

Perform appropriate antiseptic cleansing and, where clinically required, sharp or autolytic debridement.

Decide on the product plan

Based on the wound type and the amount of exudate, decide whether MANUKApli will be used alone or combined with an absorbent secondary dressing (e.g. ManukaMed MANUKAhd / MANUKAhd Lite).

Apply the honey in a controlled way

Using the MANUKApli tube, cover the wound bed with a thin, even layer (approximately 2–3 mm); do not force it into the tissue with excessive pressure.

Place the secondary dressing

Cover the wound with a suitable absorbent dressing that will manage the exudate safely; use a suitable bandage/film for fixation.

Individualize the change interval

Change the dressing generally daily for small acute wounds, and for chronic and exuding wounds at intervals determined by the amount of exudate, pain and the clinical picture.

Reassess at every change

Monitor odor, slough, granulation and epithelialization in the wound bed; update the treatment plan as needed.
